1958 Karmann Ghia

1958 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, Clean Example, 1 Owner For The Last 43 Years!

Here's a very respectable and proper Low Light Karmann Ghia with a cool known history and just 2 owners since new.

The current owner purchased the Ghia from the original owner, a US Military Serviceman, in Riverside, California back in 1971.  It was his faithful and obviously stylish daily driver during his college years, 1971-1975, while he attended the University Of Washington.  He continued to drive the car after his graduation and in 1977 he moved to New York.  At that time, the Ghia was put into storage in his mother's garage at her home in Orangevale, California in the dry Central Valley north of Sacramento.  It spent the following 24 years hibernating in her garage when in 2001 the owner commissioned Der Wagen Shop in Orangevale to revive and refresh the car to the clean condition you see now.  It has been enjoyed sparingly in the time since completion and the time has come to pass it along to a passionate new owner.

The body is in nice shape, straight, dry, and was repainted in the desirable and original-to-the-car color of Black.  Details to note include correct low light nose with proper snorkel vents, all of the often missing chrome trim and Karmann Ghia badges are present, and the original bumpers are in nice shape, too.  As you can see from the "Before" pics that show the Ghia just out of long term storage and prior to the restoration, it was a clean and solid example, far from your typical rotted and abused low light.

The interior was completely refreshed with a new headliner, door panels, seat upholstery, and carpeting, too.  The vintage wood-rimmed sport steering wheel has been on the car since the first owner and may actually be a dealer accessory, something similar to a Speedwell wheel possibly.  Other details to note include the original waffle pattern sun visors (one has cracked and been glued back together) and the original luggage area cover underneath the front hood as well.

Mechanically the Ghia features a proper and nice running 36hp engine, split case transaxle, and a stock 6 volt electrical system, too.  Other details to note include stock 15 inch smoothie wheels with original Lemmerz trim rings and radial tires with good tread, too.  It is currently turnkey, driven periodically, and recently made a trip to the mechanic to be put on the lift for the underside pics.
Overall this is a clean and respectable early Ghia that would be a good one to enjoy as it is or could easily be dialed in to the next level with some simple details according to your personal taste.  Thanks!
