1958 Karmann Ghia Conv!

1958 Karmann Ghia Convertible, Former Magazine Cover Car, Bernina Blue Beauty!

This gorgeous and highly collectible Low Light Ghia Convertible was restored some years back by Koch's and was a feature and cover car of VW Trends Magazine back in 1999.  It saw a complete body off pan restoration including a full professional mechanical rebuild as well.

Some of the many features include the very desirable original Volkswagen color of Bernina Blue, still retaining the original 36hp engine, correct and NOS sunvisor assemblies, fully powdercoated gloss black floor pan, European spec bumpers and taillights, and Denman wide white wall tires just to name a few.

The restoration was completed approximately 12 years ago and although the car has been driven only 1300 miles and enjoyed in those years, it still presents beautifully.  There are some light signs of time showing on the restoration though with a couple tiny stone chips in the paint, a small ding in the top of the rear fender, and some small rust blisters starting in two areas on the lower rockers.  Depending upon your personal preference the car could easily continue to be enjoyed as it is or those small areas could be repaired and blended if you prefer the appearance to a higher standard.  The body is very straight, the paint has a great shine, and the gloss black powdercoated floor pan is rock solid as well.  The convertible top was very nicely redone in quality canvas during the restoration by Julio at Convertible World.

The interior was also completely refreshed by Julio and still looks great till this day.  The colors, patterns, and materials are very faithful to the originals.  Other details to note include the correct and nicely restored late Low Light Ghia steering wheel that was restored by Koch's, trip meter speedometer, the correct Ghia radio block off plate, and the accessory fuel reserve lever extension, too.

Mechanically this Convertible is fully turnkey and runs and drives well on the bone stock running gear.  The original 1192cc 36hp engine, correct split case/first gear non-synchro transaxle, and front beam were all completely professionally rebuilt.  The engine details are very technically correct and the original 15 inch smoothie wheels were properly refinished and wear correct 5.60-15 Denman bias ply wide white wall tires and polished beauty rings, too.  Last but not least, the electrical system remains factory 6 volt and works through a completely new wiring harness.

Overall this is a very nice and special early Ghia Convertible, the pinnacle of the Karmann Ghia food chain.  This example is a great one to enjoy as a driver or with a little bit of care it could return to show-stopper status.  Thanks!
