1959 Ragtop Beetle!

1959 Ragtop Beetle, Mignonette Green, Beautiful!

This clean early Ragtop was purchased from the original owner back in 1988 and what was originally intended to be a "repaint and driver" quickly snowballed into head-to-toe restoration that took 2.5 years and was completed in 1991.  Since that time the car was featured in VW Trends (RIP), Super VW (France), and Vochomania (Mexico) magazines and received awards and special recognition at 32 shows over a 20 year span.  Those awards included 15 First Places including 4 at the VW Classic, multiple Top 10 awards, as well as Best Vintage, Best Foreign, and a Second Place in class, at the most recent show it entered, the VW Classic in Irvine, California, a few years ago.  Shortly thereafter it was purchased and put on display inside a large collection in a Volkswagen dealership showroom.

Some of the many features include being a factory Sunroof car with the matching numbers original 36hp engine, being an original Southern California car, and having just over 96,000 original miles.  The original engine has been confirmed by the Birth Certificate from Volkswagen, it has the original floor pan, the original and relatively rare color of L14 Mignonette Green, and the original Volkswagen accessory wood slat roof rack, too.

The body is in relatively good condition, not perfect, and is showing some signs of age on the restoration.  The body and paint work was done over 25 years ago, it's been driven sparingly in that time, in mature adult ownership, and has spent most of its time on display and in indoor storage since completion.  There are some flaws including a couple small tears on the lower edge of the hood, some rust blisters on the lower driver's door and door sill, and a couple other little spots.  It has the proper flat front hood, small license light decklid, icepick handled doors, correct aprons including the H pattern rear, too.  The restorer retained as many original details as possible, choosing to rechrome the original German bumpers, door handles, vent window frames, and other small parts rather than replacing them with inferior reproductions.  The pan is very clean and solid although there are some pinholes beneath the battery.

The interior was completely refreshed and is impressively faithful to original as well.  Great care was taken in sourcing accurate materials including seat upholstery, the mohair headliner, and German square weave carpeting.  The door panels are the originals and were redyed to freshen them up.  The dash is in nice and uncut condition, features a Sapphire I square button radio (not currently working), and the early clean needle speedometer shows just over 96,000 original miles.  Additionall the original transparent sun visor is present, impressively intact after 58 years of life!  Under the hood is very clean with an original wiring cover that was NOS at the time of restoration, nice wiring, cool accessory "sun burst" gas cap, clean and solid spare tire well, and a matching spare wheel, too.

Mechanically this Beetle is bone stock and features the original-to-the-car 36hp engine which was thoroughly gone through and detailed at the time of restoration, the stock split case transaxle, stock suspension, original 6 volt system, and is stock down to the 5.60-15 wide white wall bias ply tires on the original 15 inch two-toned smoothie wheels.  It has been driven approximately 13,000 miles since completion and is still a remarkably clean and good looking car!

Overall this is a great looking, proper, and accurate early Ragtop Beetle that has been well cared for and received a loving restoration some years back.  It has always been a hit at high profile Volkswagen shows and is a solid value for the money.  Thanks!
