1962 23 Mouse Grey!

1962 23 Window Walkthru Deluxe Microbus, Mouse Grey and Pearl White, Excellent Restoration!

This exceedingly beautiful and fresh Mouse Grey Deluxe was built on April 12th, 1962, left the Volkswagen factory on April 30th, and was delivered to Portland, Oregon.  It survived much better than most and was treated to an exceptionally high level stock restoration a few years back by one of the top early Deluxe Bus specialists who has been building them for many years now.  It is extremely faithful to the way it left the factory, resisting all modifications and updating, and matching precisely the data on the Birth Certificate from Volkswagen.  The restoration was finished at the end of 2017 and it is still super fresh and beautiful.

We see lots of shiny 21's and 23's out there but I can assure you we do not see many genuine 23's of this caliber.  Plainly and simply, this Bus is not for the guy who just wants one, it's for the guy who wants an extraordinary example that would embarrass the average restoration attempt.  The restorer is a seasoned veteran and the current owner is a long time and advanced Bus collector who has had many remarkable Buses over his collecting years.

The body and Mouse Grey and Pearl White paint are simply first rate and were professionally done by Trevor Reis and Kevin Greenquist of Brickhaus Restorations in Tempe, Arizona.  They learned their trade from the famous Matt Howard of Deluxe Customs who is a very highly regarded shop within the Vintage Porsche, Volkswagen, and high end collector car community.  Trevor and Kevin have consistently received awards and magazine features and this Mouse Grey 23 Window is another example of their talent.  The body is super straight, the door gaps and panel alignment is nothing short of excellent, and all of the technical details are correct as well.  Details to note include having all the correct doors, church key decklid, thick lip doglegs, outie vents with Deluxe trim, flat rear wheel wells, slash cut bumpers, and factory 15 inch Bus wheels, too.  The underside, belly pans, inner wheel wells, and floors are as good as it gets.  Beautifully detailed, quality paint work, and super sterile, too.  You won't find nicer and will have a difficult time finding another one this good.

The Basalt Grey interior is excellent, fresh, and as faithful to factory as they come.  From the mohair headliner, original style panels, correct pleated Deluxe seat upholstery on the precisely correct original seats including the hard-to-find 1962-1963 middle seat with the skinny rubber grab bars with the chrome end caps, original jail bars, the Deluxe rear seat bar, correct aluminum coat hooks, correct kick panels, German square weave carpeting on the rear luggage shelf, 80mph speedometer, Golde sunroof handle, etc.  The small details are present and accurate down to the radio blockoff plate in the dash as that's just the way this Bus left the factory over 56 years ago.  No free styling, no faking the funk, just a mature focus on quality and respectfully restoring a great example to the way Volkswagen originally built it.

Mechanically the Bus is bone stock, fully refreshed, and features an era-appropriate 1200cc stale air 40hp engine, stock reduction box transaxle, all stock suspension and brake system, restored 15 inch Bus wheels with proper Deluxe trim rings and topped with Firestone 6.40-15 bias ply tires, and it is still factory 6 volt, too.  The engine is very accurately dressed and we have videos of the Bus starting, running, and driving to share with seriously interested parties as well.

If you've ever gone to an Orange County Transporter Organization meet event in Southern California where there are literally hundreds of Split Buses in attendance, and a small handful of Buses stand above the rest, this Mouse Grey 23 is in that elite group that makes you stop and stare.  Thanks!
