1967 Westy SO42 Survivor

1967 Westfalia SO42 Poptop Camper Bus with 43,600 Original Miles, Stunning Time Capsule Survivor!

This super exceptional Westfalia Camper is very much the definition of a time warp Vintage Volkswagen.  It was purchased new in Connecticut back in 1967 by a German engineer.  He had taken it on a few cross country trips to visit his daughter in Oregon and by 1971 the Bus had just 40,000 miles on it.  Sadly the owner passed away that year and the family hung onto their Dad's old Westy until 1993 when they sold it to a car collector in the Pacific Northwest.  He carefully detailed, serviced, and revived the Bus in 1995 ad now, 21 years later, the Bus has seen just 43,600 miles from new and is virtually in the same condition it was when the original owner parked it for the last time 45 years ago in 1971!

Back in 1999 the Bus was featured in the Vintage Issue of HotVW's Magazine and the story of its life is recorded in great detail there.

Some of the many features include being almost all original paint with the exception of the bumpers which were repainted during the revival, extremely dry and factory straight body, beautiful original interior including seat covers, paneling, curtains, rubber, hardware, etc.  Additionally it has the original tent, poles, and tents bags in excellent shape as you could imagine.

The body is in excellent condition and displays the gorgeous and strong original Pearl White paint that is still glossy to this day!  There are some light chips and tiny dings as you'd expect to see on a now 49 year old unrestored original Bus.  The nose has lots of tiny stone chips that have been touched up with a dab of paint.  There are also a couple small dings in the nose to the left of the emblem which can be seen in the pics.  The body is incredibly dry with phenomenal original floors, rockers, jackpoints, outriggers, etc.  This Bus was very well cared for, properly stored out of the weather, and its current condition clearly demonstrates that fact.  The bumpers are the correct pointed end type and all of the doors, decklid, and apron are correct and original, too.

The interior is also extremely nice, sterile, and original, too.  You might note that the original icebox is missing and a vintage ice chest is in its place.  That is an interesting story in that the original engineer owner had the dealership remove the icebox at the dealership as he had designed a new custom layout for that area that also utilizes a two burner propane cooking stove that attaches to the top of the bulkhead wall.  In true German engineer fashion he sketched detailed mechanical drawings on drafting paper with the dimensions and specs and that original drawing is also included as well as a large stack of paperwork and service records of the Bus.  Other interior details to note are the superb original seat covers, excellent dash with the proper 1967 only radio blockoff plate with a dealer installed electrical plug in it, original plaid window curtains, near mint front cab panels, excellent original wood paneling with only light signs of their years, and a very nice poptop canvas, too.  A peak beneath the front floor mat will demonstrate the gentle life and mega clean state of this Bus.

Mechanically the Bus is a turnkey driver and runs and drives well.  Back in 1995 when it was revived it was treated to a new set of cylinder heads, a new carburetor, 009 distributor, and a new coil, too.  Other than that the Bus was serviced recently with new brakes and received a fresh set of BF Goodrich white stripe bias ply tires in the correct size of 7.00-14.  The engine is the original 1500cc single port, the transaxle is the correct 46mm big nut, and the electrical is the factory 12 volt system as well.  The Bus was driven from Los Angeles to Grass Valley, California last year and performed nicely.

Without a doubt this is one of the nicest unrestored SO42 Westfalias you will ever encounter.  The extreme low mileage, known history, excellent and shiny original paint, and superb, straight, and dry body are testimony to a truly quality German built Volkswagen Camper Bus.  Thanks!
